Minnie Mouse Crochet Sweater Step-by-Step Tutorial

| Original: February 16, 2018

Please note that this is the tutorial for assembling the Minnie Mouse Sweater with detailed photographs of the work in progress. The FREE crochet pattern for the sweater can be found here.
I probably shouldn't be telling you this, but before crocheting this sweater, I have never crocheted a sweater before. Creating this sweater took a lot of trial and error.

I examined a lot of different crochet patterns for graphgans and sweaters to find a stitch that is suitable and not too stiff. I am so proud of this sweater I actually wore it a few times out in public before finally picking out a weekend to take the photos you see on this blog with my little BB.

The sweater is meant to be a relaxed fit. The finished measurements are approximately 50cm wide and 67cm in length. If I were to make it again, I would probably add a few more rows of light grey at the top so that it's a bit longer.

Because this is my very first sweater design, I am not sure how to write out the crochet pattern in different sizes. I can only give you suggestions on how to change the sizing.

Sizing Suggestions:

  • Gauge: 10 cm x 10 cm (4" x 4") = 12 hdc stitches worked in the space between the stitches x 12 rows
    • i.e. 1 stitch = 0.83cm, and 1cm = 1.2 stitches
SMALL: 50cm (20") wide - 61 stitches across
MEDIUM: 54cm (21.25") wide - 65 stitches across
LARGE: 58cm (22.8") wide - 69 stitches across
XLARGE: 60cm (23.6") wide: 73 stitches across

I started off this sweater at the hem/ribbing using single crochet stitches to the back loops only. I have a tendency to crochet tightly, so I had to do this part several times.

I want to make sure that the length of my hem would measure the same as the final width of the sweater without stretching it so that it won't bunch the bottom of my sweater too much.

To start, make the number of rows for your ribbing to be the same number of stitches required for your size. For example, for a size medium, you will eventually need 65 sts across, so make 65 rows for the ribbing.

You will want to keep the Minnie Mouse motif close to the middle of the sweater. Each size increase is an increase of 4 stitches. So simply increase stitches on both sides in multiples of two.

The length of the sweater is approximately 67cm. If you would prefer it to be longer, I would suggest adding extra rows to the light grey area above the Minnie Mouse motif.

Remember that most of the half-double crochets (HDCs) for the sweater are worked between the post.

You can use any kind of stitch to sew and assemble your sweater. For myself, instead of using a needle, I decided to use single crochets to attach my pieces together. If you are wondering, no it did not make my sweater particularly bulky at the seams.

Attach the sweater at the shoulder seams first by aligning the front and back panels together.

While you are at it, you can attach the collar to your sweater too. For this part, I used slip stitches to attach my collar.

Then it's time to attach the sleeves. The dark grey part of the sweater should match and align with the shoulder part of the sleeve.

Then sew the sleeve from under the arms to the wrist. Once you're done, then you can sew down the sides of the sweater. For my sweater, I decided to only sew up to the ribbing so that there are side slits at the ribbed hem.

And finally, the finishing touches of sewing the dots onto the bow!
