Crochet Half Color Changes for the Perfect Stripes

| Original: July 22, 2019

During the making and designing of this doll, I learned some new techniques! Here I wanted to share with you this new method I learned to change colors. This method works very well if you want to have distinct color separation.

As you can see in the photo below, the doll on the left (pink underwear) is using the new technique, whereas the doll on the right (purple underwear) is when you work in a new color in the next row.

The difference is not significant, but you can tell that there is a slight "color leak/bleed" to the purple underwear as compared to the clean lines on the pink underwear.

To do this technique, we first want to perform a half-color change.

How to Crochet Half-Color Changes

1. At the end of the last round of Color A, (in this case, pink), slip stitch into the next stitch and then change your yarn to Color B (in this case, peach).

2. Insert your hook into the next stitch.

3. Wrap yarn around the hook and pull up the first loop in Color A. You should now have 2 loops on your hook that are two different colors.

4. Then, wrap the yarn around the hook in Color B.

5. Pull it up through the two existing loops on your hook to finish up the single crochet stitch.

6. Keep the color yarn that you are working with on top and keep rotating so that the inside would look like the following.

7. And then you will finish off your half-color change round!

Join at the very end by just slip stitching into the first st of the round so that it doesn't look like there's an obvious jogged stitch (no photo, sorry!). This does not count as a stitch.

Then for the next round, just continue crocheting in Color B yarn as you normally would.

I really liked this method for changing colors and will probably continue to use this technique for my amigurumis in the future!

I don't think the instructions are complete here. It's not saying what to do after the color change. Are you supposed to sl st around the whole round?

Juli Anne said...

Nope! Once you finish the round where do you do the half color changes, you just continue crocheting with the new colour in the next round. No need for slipstitches after that.

I love this idea of a straight line, but mine ended up with an indent between the 2 colors. I’m not sure what happened. Did I pull too hard on the first color?

Juli Anne said...

That initially happened to me too. Then I realized that I needed to twist my yarn in the other direction for it to look more normal (see video).

Got it! I didn’t even notice the video, I apparently just scrolled right past it. Thank you. I will try again. 🙂

The video is a MUST.

Without the twist-the-thread-to-have-the-next-thread-to-pull-at-the-back it sort of works but the last A color stitches are malformed

Thanks for the tutorial :)

Hey :) thank you for the tutorial. I have a question. How do i count while colour changing? Do i have to count it as the first row of the new colour or do i have to count the first row of a new colour after the changing round?

Juli Anne said...

I usually use this technique in the round just before I need to change the color. So for example, if Round 15 is crocheted in a new color, then I would use this technique on Round 14 to prepare for the color change.
