You might think that your brand new baby is too young to be creative, but babies are amongst the most creative human beings in their own way. They are new to the world and as such, everything is vitally interesting to them. So, it is important that you stimulate their creativity now if you want them to grow and learn now, and if you want to encourage them to be creative as they get older too.
With that in mind, here are some nursery decor ideas that are sure to spark creativity in your little one:
Focus on movement
When it comes to sparking creativity in a little one, then movement is one of the best tools at your disposal. They may not be mobile themselves, but they can get a lot of enjoyment out of watching things in their environment move.
When you’re around, they will obviously get the most enjoyment from watching you move around whether you’re doing a silly little dance or playing peak-a-book, but when you aren’t there, a mobile over the crib is a must. If it makes sounds and displays lights, then so much the better, just make sure they can easily be turned off so that your mobile doesn’t prevent baby from getting a good night’s sleep.
Let the crib face the window
Position your baby’s crib so that it is facing towards the window, if possible, is another great way to spark their creativity because they will be able to see birds flying by, trees blowing in the wind, the clouds making shapes, and so much more than a boring old wall, no matter how prettily decorated it may be. Just buy some blackout blinds for sleepy time and having your crib face the window will be no problem at all.
Focus on textures
Giving your baby a sensory experience is the best way to spark creativity and get them interested in the world, so bringing as many different textures into the nursery, from fluffy rugs on the wooden floor to crocheted blankets in the bassinet - incidentally, these tips for choosing the right bassinet mattress are very useful in that department - anything you can do to add a new texture for your baby to explore will be very good for their creative development indeed.
Colour contrasts
Something else that will get your baby’s senses really firing is providing them with lots of contrasts of color. So, instead of decorating their nursery all in cream or white or yellow or whatever, think about choosing at least two colors that have a strong contrast like blue and yellow or red and green. They might not be to your exact tastes, but kids love those bold bright colors and exploring the difference between them, and this is something they can do in a fashion even when they are young babies.
Invest in a speaker
Babies live hearing new sounds for the first time, so when you’re decorating their nursery, make sure you have space for a little speaker. That way, you can play them everything from the greatest of classical music to birdsong to audiobook nursery rhymes and they will love them all.
Leave lots of floor space
It’s a good idea, when decorating the nursery, to leave lots of open floor space available, Babies love to explore, and although yours may not be able to move around much right now, it won’t be long before they are rolling, crawling and even walking, and the more space they have to do that the better.
Right now, if you want to give them something fun to do at ground level, rugs that are printed with farmyards or roads, that you can play on with toy tractors or horses or whatever, are a great option, as are baby activity play gyms that play sounds, push buttons and have rip off flaps, etc. Basically, make sure that there is always something for them to do around there.
Hang pictures
Hanging pictures, whether they are of family or cute animals or cartoon characters, on any blank walls will ensure that your baby always has something interesting to look at no matter what direction they are looking in, and it will help them to learn people’s faces or what makes a cat a cat or whatever depending on your choice of art.
Of course, abstract art is also a good choice as the chaos of the colours, shapes, and textures are very stimulating indeed.
It really is never too early to be creative!
