Being creative doesn't take a lot of time or skill, but it has a lot of benefits: it calms you down and keeps your brain in shape, even if it doesn't include arithmetic or reasoning. Yet for some, it can be hard to be creative simply because they don’t know how to do it.
You don’t have to write or paint or make music to express your creativity, however; there are many ways to do it. Once you find your own way to be creative – even if it’s unusual – you’ll be able to enjoy that creativity and all its advantages. Read on to find out more.
Have A Ritual
Performing a ritual before beginning your creative hobby, no matter what it might be, is a wonderful way to get in touch with your intuitive, creative self.
Signalling your brain that it's time to switch gears can be as easy as lighting candles, putting on an apron, performing some light stretching, or arranging your workspace. Just getting ready to create - and doing it every time you want to - will keep you in the right mindset to enjoy yourself.
Embrace Boredom
Studies have shown that when people are bored, they tend to think more critically and creatively. According to this view, exciting ideas emerge when an unoccupied mind actively seeks out distractions.
Research shows that being bored makes us think more deeply and come up with new ideas. The idea is that when the mind is bored, it looks for something to do, which leads to daydreaming and then to new ideas.
Don't fill every spare minute with work or scrolling through your phone. Instead, give your mind a chance to relax. Who knows what will happen if you let your mind wander?
You might work out exactly what the best thing would be to help you by not actively trying to keep yourself occupied.
Make Time For Play
Studies show that when we do what we enjoy to the fullest, we get out of our own heads. This helps us think outside the box and shuts down our inner critic. Play with your toys, make something, go outside... The most important thing is to think like a child and really play, and you'll feel so much better for it.
Keep Your Brain Active
Sometimes the best creative ideas come from a busy brain. This might seem to contradict the point we made above about allowing yourself to get bored, but since different things work for different people, it’s worth trying both of these ideas to see which one is best for you.
If you can keep your brain active by learning a new skill such as first aid from MyCPR NOW or doing a puzzle, for example, the creative spark might ignite, giving you more and more ideas until you stumble across something you are interested in.
Listen To Someone Inspiring
Listening to a powerful TED talk or an interview with a fascinating person is a great way to quickly and easily change your point of view. There are a lot of interesting people out there, and there's nothing more exciting than learning from someone who is really doing something new in their field.
It can truly inspire you to try something for yourself.
