Every now and then, I dabble in crafts that are not crochet and I have fun doing it! If you love Disney and Taylor Swift, you'll want to check out this DIY project!
Earlier this year, our family took a Disney Cruise vacation! Disney Cruise vacations are not cheap, so to help with costs, we chose to take one of their shorter 4-day repositioning cruises from Vancouver to San Diego on the Disney Wonder. It was a great way to get a taste of cruising with Disney without breaking the bank!
Every Disney vacation deserves something special made like all my other Disney vacations. I usually craft a lot as preparation and help build up excitement!
My girls and I have officially become Swifties ever since watching the Taylor Swift: Eras Tour concert movie! Taylor Swift's music collection has been playing inside our home daily since then! So, why not combine my love for both Disney and Taylor Swift?
I searched Etsy for the perfect Princess Eras Tour design, hoping to see Ariel, my favorite Disney princess, take center stage. However, most designs featured Cinderella. Determined to have Ariel as my main princess on my Princess Eras Tour sweatshirt, I created my own design.
If you love Taylor Swift and you love crocheting, don't forget to check out my amigurumi Taylor Swift!
Making the Princess Eras Tour Design using Canva
I used Canva to make my own Princess Eras Tour image. To achieve this, I searched for high-quality Disney princess clipart images with a transparent background. However, if you find a clipart that doesn't have a white background that you absolutely love, don't worry - Photoshop can easily solve that problem.
I added all my princess clipart to my Princess Eras Tour Canva template. The Eras Tour poster already has some of the colors set, so I tried to coordinate the colors of the original poster with the princess. For example, Tiana with the green background, Rapunzel with the lavender background, etc.
Inspired by concert t-shirts, I wanted to add a special touch to the back of the sweatshirt. I created a list of all the Disney princesses and their respective movie release dates.
My original Princess Eras Tour poster image had the princesses in their original vibrant colors just as they appear in the clipart. But, to add to the authenticity, I muted the colors a bit just like the original poster. To do this, select the image and click "Edit Image".
Under fx Effects, select Duotone.
Then click "Custom", choose either the "Highlights" or "Shadows", click on the eyedropper, and select the color in that box. Then change the intensity by dragging the slider.
Now since this was *my* Princess Eras Tour design, I can make it however I want and so I decided to make the princesses pop out a bit more by extending their image beyond their confined boxes, including Ariel's mermaid tail.
To ensure the white background from the Canva design does not get printed on the iron-on heat transfer, I used Photoshop to remove the white background and inside the lettering.
Making the Custom Iron-On Heat Transfer
With the design finalized, it's time to translate it into a wearable masterpiece. I researched where I could get a custom iron-on heat transfer made promptly because I was running out of time before I set sail. I eventually found a seller on Temu who creates custom iron-on heat transfers.
I chose the largest size I could find (approximately 21 cm width and 29 cm height) which served perfectly for the front and back of my sweater. If you buy the custom transfer on Temu, make sure you choose one that says "Personalization" to allow for customization.
Ironing Out the Details: Transfer Time!
I found a muted green sweatshirt from Ardene that was the perfect green that complements the colors of the Princess Eras Tour design.
Tips for Success:
- Preheat your iron or heat press to the recommended temperature.
- Preheat the desired location of your shirt or sweatshirt.
- Place the transfer on your sweatshirt or t-shirt, make sure it's centered and straight!
- Cover the transfer with a thin piece of protective cloth to prevent scorching.
- Apply firm, even pressure while pressing for the specified time.
- Let the sweatshirt cool completely before peeling off the carrier sheet. This allows the adhesive to cool and properly set.
- Instructions might specify a hot peel or cold peel, so make sure to follow those!
- Cover it with a piece of protective cloth after removing the carrier sheet and press again with the iron.
- Turn the shirt or sweatshirt inside out and press again on the underside.
The results were incredible!
The back of the sweatshirt was slightly more challenging. The font I chose had some very thin lines, and some of them didn't transfer as nicely as the bolder elements on the front of the sweatshirt. You can see that in the middle line of the "E" and the horizontal line of the "A".
While noticeable upon close inspection, the overall design remained beautiful and perfectly readable from a distance.
Setting Sail in Style
Despite the minor setback with the transfer for the back of the sweatshirt, the finished product exceeded my expectations. My one-of-a-kind Disney Princess x Taylor Swift concert sweatshirt all came together perfectly!
I hope my DIY project has inspired you to create your own Princess Eras Tour sweatshirt that will be perfect for your next Disney vacation or any day you want to celebrate your love for Taylor Swift and Disney princesses!
And here are a few photos from our Disney Cruise vacation just to prove we were actually there!
