Some crochet ideas come from sentimental places. Others are just born out of curiosity. I don’t know why, but one day I woke up and thought, ‘You know what would be fun? A giant crocheted fortune cookie.’ So I made one.
I knew I wanted to make this giant crochet fortune cookie with some plush chenille yarn, but knowing how delicate chenille yarn can be when taking it apart, I decided to start off prototyping the idea with some cotton yarn.
In fact, I decided to document the whole design process in a YouTube video! I've been watching a lot of artists and small business owners on YouTube sharing their behind-the-scenes and and felt inspired to start documenting my own journey as a crochet artist/designer.
I'm still early in my YouTube journey, but if sharing my creative process helps even one person feel excited to start their own, I'd be over the moon.

In the video, you'll get to see how I, as a crochet artist, can sometimes overthink the simplest of patterns. But once I get past the initial phase, the whole thing comes together easier than you could imagine, which makes this crochet fortune cookie a very beginner-friendly crochet pattern.
Fun fact, I once watched a documentary on the Discovery Channel on how fortune cookies are made - turns out, the crochet design for one isn't all that different!

With two skeins of chenille yarn, I crocheted 30 rounds of single crochet - stopping about a third of the second skein left. Selfishly, I wanted to save that for another project even though I could have kept going.
Anyway, this gave me a circle about 19 inches (almost 50 cm) across. Once assembled, the fortune cookie measured 12 inches (30 cm) across, not including the paper fortune that sticks out from the side.

If you've been following me for a while, this project might remind you of my Crochet Chinese Lucky Candy Pillow from a few years back. It's made with the same cozy chenille yarn and a similar dose of playful nostalgia.
This was actually one of the trickier projects I've ever had to photograph. To do justice to this crocheted fortune cookie and show how big and perfectly shaped it was, I felt the need to photograph it with other things in the image without it feeling too cluttered.

Anyhow, the finished giant crochet fortune cookie is a great throw pillow size and measures approximately 12 inches (30 cm) across, and guess what? It doubles as a comfy neck pillow too!

Row 1: Ch 16, sc into the second ch from the hook and sc down the chain (15 sts)

Row 5-6: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (3 sts x 2 rows)
Turn to its side and sc into the edges of the heart...
2 sc into the edge down the bump,
Sc3tog between the 2 bumps,
2 sc into the edge going up the bump,
3 sc-inc on the top of the bump,
5 sc down the edge,
3 sc into the same st at the bottom point of the heart,
5 sc up the edge,
3 sc-inc on the top of the bump.
Cut and fasten off.
Make 2 so you can sew one to each side of the fortune paper.

Assembly
- Fold the circle in half and stuff lightly. Don't stuff it too firm because you still need to pinch the middle of the fortune cookie.
- Using the tail end that you did not cut off, slst along the edges and make a semi-circle. Slst through the crocheted fortune paper somewhere so that you don't need to sew it on afterward.
- This part is optional, but it helps hold the crocheted fortune cookie pillow shape a little bit better. I used a mattress stitch where I sewed the pinch in the middle of the fortune cookie.

- Sew on the heart on both sides of the crocheted fortune paper.
